How this works

Some calligraphy fonts have special “alternate characters” to add tails or hearts to letters, like this:

Previously, to access these characters you had to open a character picker like Windows Character Map or Mac Font Book, hunt down the special character, and copy and paste it into your design.

This new feature lets you automatically add tails to the start or end of words and heart connectors between words.

There are several options you can choose for tails at the start or end of words and how you want to connect words together.

Since this feature is usually used in cases where you’re cutting out text, we also automatically connect dots on i’s using Cuttle’s popular Connected Text feature.

Fonts that support tails and hearts

Only some fonts have these special characters. Also they are usually only supported on lowercase letters.

Here are the current fonts that are supported:

Note that user uploaded fonts do not yet support automatically adding tails and hearts, even if the uploaded font includes those character alternates. To access character alternates in uploaded fonts, you will still need to open the font in Windows Character Map or Mac Font Book and copy and paste the desired character into your text.

But we plan to add more fonts with these features to the Pro Fonts collection. If you have a favorite font that you’d like to see in the collection, please let us know! (Reply to this email.)

How to create text with tails and hearts in the Cuttle Editor

You can use this new feature in your own designs!

How to run a Pet Ornament Fundraiser - a Q&A with Cheri Thomas

Last year, maker Cheri Thomas used Cuttle’s Paw Ornament to raise money for a local animal shelter.

She split the sales 50/50 with the shelter and sold over $1,000 in ornaments in 10 days.

Cheri generously hosted a Facebook Live Q&A on the Cuttle Facebook Group where she described how she reached out to the organization and put together this fundraiser.

Here are some takeaways:

  • She emailed the director of the shelter with some photos of ornaments she had already made.
  • She proposed selling paw ornaments for $10 each, splitting the sales 50/50 with the shelter. For each ornament, $5 covers Cheri’s time and materials and $5 goes to the organization.
  • Cheri says “it’s easier than you think!” Shelters are always looking for new ways to fundraise.
  • Once the shelter was on board, she made a flyer in Canva using photos from the shelter’s social media.
  • She took orders using Jotform — here is an example Jotform link she shared from a fundraiser she’s doing this year.
  • Most of the orders originate from the shelter promoting the fundraiser on their social media.
  • Many orders are for multiple ornaments. (People have lots of pets, or pets of family members.)
  • The fundraiser has brought in additional business. People tell Cheri they discovered her shop by buying an ornament from the fundraiser.

If you’re thinking of running a fundraiser for the first time, I encourage you to check out the recording of Cheri’s Q&A (you will need to be a member of the Facebook Group to access this video).

Cheri also generously offered to answer any additional questions about this topic on our Facebook Group.

Thank you Cheri for sharing your knowledge with the community!

Video Tutorial: Make “On Santa’s Nice List” Christmas Medals

In Federico’s livestream last week, he answered Katrina B-S’s request for an “On Santa’s Nice List” Christmas medal template.

He creates three variations of a basic medal design, and shows how to engrave mirrored acrylic.

You can personalize all three designs using the template he created.

Federico hosts a live stream on our Facebook Group every Thursday at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET. See you there!

  • Read Me: Embedded components now show warnings and info (console.warn and console.info) that occur anywhere within the component.
  • Scripting: Fixed a bug where RichText class names didn’t display correctly in expression results or when logged in an expression.
