Family Names Snowflake Ornament - SVG Generator ❄️

Hi everyone,

Here's the latest with Cuttle.

New Template: Family Names Snowflake Ornament ❄️

Our latest template lets you instantly generate a personalized Snowflake Ornament for a family. Just type in the names to automatically generate an SVG cut file.

  • The snowflake automatically “evolves” to accommodate up to 12 names
  • The names you type are automatically placed and welded
  • Score lines are added to make the names pop
  • Customize the year in the center
  • Option for one or two layers

The photo on top is the two layer option. The front layer is pre-painted white MDF and the back layer is walnut plywood.

The single layer version also looks great! Here’s an example cut from white MDF:

The Family Tree Ornament from last Christmas is one of Cuttle’s most downloaded templates of all time.

I know “family ornaments” that can be personalized with all the names in a family are big sellers for our community. I’ve been working hard on a follow up to that one and I hope this new snowflake is a big hit for y’all this season! ❄️❄️❄️

Video Tutorial: Embedding Magnets in Laser Cut Parts 🧲

In Federico’s livestream from last week, he created a tester to find the perfect press fit for embedding magnets. If you are unfamiliar with press fitting, we recommend watching our beginner tutorial on creating press fit inlay earrings.

After manually creating a series of holes that are each a tiny bit smaller than the last, Federico shows how to hack the Linear Repeat modifier to automate this process.

You can use the template to create testers for round magnets of any size by setting the startingPoint parameter. Here’s the template he created.

Federico hosts a live stream on our Facebook Group every Thursday at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET. See you there!

Video Tutorial: Make a Christmas Ornament with Game Tiles 🎲

In Federico’s livestream from two weeks ago, he answered Sarai-ann K’s request for a Christmas Ornament with Scrabble Tiles.

He remixes our Letter Tile Keychain template designed by Brian Wente. You can add and arrange multiple names and place them inside the ornament.

Here’s the template he created.

Video Q&A: Modifying a Box Template with a Decorative Pattern 📦

In this 7 minute video, Federico demonstrates how to modify one of Cuttle’s box templates by adding a decorative pattern to it. He explains how to restrict the pattern within the bounds of the box, and uses the Tile Repeat modifier to generate the pattern.

Here’s the template he created.

Community Spotlight: Hannah Robertson (@hannahilea) 📘

We’ve been so impressed by the work Hannah Robertson (@hannahilea) has been sharing in the Cuttle Discord.

She recently wrote a blog post about her work and her process using Cuttle.

She’s used Cuttle to generate a music roll cut file from a MIDI file for a music box, made magnetic decorative book ends, a doorbell chime cover with an evolving pattern, and more.

She’s also been using Cuttle as a prototyping tool for other projects: mocking up a weaving pattern, playing with Moiré patterns, Kumiko patterns, parallax cartoon studies, and even wrote an interactive poem using the Cuttle Read Me.

Check out Hannah’s blog post to read more. She’s also shared all of the Cuttle projects she wrote about if you want to learn from or build off of them!

Thank you Hannah for pushing the limits of Cuttle and sharing your work with us!

Other Improvements and Fixes 🐞

  • Smoother snapping. Now, when dragging a snapping point, the point’s offset from the cursor is maintained. This results in smoother snapping behavior when performing small drags. It’s subtle but it makes the Editor feel better!
  • When you drag out Text, it’s now by default aligned to the “center” and “middle” to be more consistent with our other shapes. Thank you Hasan, Brian, and Ralph for the feedback!
  • Added support for importing SVG files with <symbol> and <switch> tags. Thank you Kelly K for the bug report!
  • Improved the reliability and quality of boolean modifiers.
  • Fixed stroke width rendering in project thumbnails.
  • Added a new 👁️ Visible modifier for dynamically showing and hiding geometry with a boolean (true / false) parameter. Thank you Brian Wente for the suggestion!
  • Moved some advanced modifiers like the new 👁️ Visible and Warp Coordinates into a Modify > Advanced sub-menu.
  • Added scripting reference for more math utilities like mix(), clamp(), saturate(), smoothstep(), and fract().
